Bedford - Huntly Glen

bedford-huntly-glen-01Huntly Glen is a beautiful farm located in the Bedford district, amongst the foothills of the Winterberg mountain range and only 2 ½ hours from East London and Port Elizabeth, making it the perfect place for a weekend getaway.

The historic home of the family of Thomas Pringle, leader of the 1820 Scottish Settler Party, Huntly Glen is owned and managed by 5th generation Ernest and Anne Pringle who invite you to share this idyllic spot with them and learn about the area.

Accommodation
Stay in the restored and fully furnished farmhouse offering 2 bedrooms en-suite, one of which is large enough to pass as a “family” room, sleeping 4 comfortably. It has its own outside entrance, and 2 bedrooms (1 bedroom has a basin in the room), sharing a full bathroom (shower, toilet and basin) plus another separate toilet in the house.

The kitchen is fully equipped, and the lounge and diningroom each contain their own fireplace for those chilly winter evenings. Guests can also enjoy sitting around a cosy fire in the braai/boma area in the evenings where you can listen to the little scops owl calling or the jackals yipping on the mountainside next to the house.

There is a large patio with endless views across the mountains making it a wonderful area to just sit and relax while you watch the kudu as they quietly make their way across the opposite mountain slope. The house is far enough removed from the main homestead to ensure privacy, peace and quiet.

All linen and towels are supplied, and the house is serviced daily. Let out on a self-catering basis, the house is ideal for group bookings as it sleeps 8–10 people. Our booking policy means you have the house (and farm) entirely to yourself for the duration of your stay, and even if only 1 couple books the house, other guests are not accommodated at the same time to ensure absolute privacy.

In addition to the above farmhouse accommodation, there is also a 1-bedroom flat plus sitting room at the main homestead but set far enough away to allow for privacy.

For those who do not wish to self-cater, meals consisting of traditional farm fare, and made with the freshest, organically grown farm produce can be booked in advance.

Surrounded by mountains, spectacular views and immense peace and quiet, Huntly Glen offers a getaway for those who love the outdoors and tranquillity. All farm roads are passable for vehicles with high clearance, so you can even go out for a game drive on your own. There are also some wonderful picnic areas, where you can disappear for the day. For the energetic there are safe hikes and shorter walks, with roads and farm tracks criss-crossing the farm, bringing you in contact with the abundant birdlife. We also have a tennis court available on the farm.

When you stay at Huntly Glen, you will have the privilege of viewing the largest privately owned and collected butterfly collection in South Africa. This collection is also internationally recognised. Spend an hour or two with Ernest, and you are guaranteed to look at insects through new eyes.  Our night skies are an absolute must for all the “starry” folk – even the “non-starry” folk will be spellbound!

PET POLICY: All dogs, cats and caged birds welcome all year round. Pets sleep inside; bring own pet beds, bedding and bowls. Dogs are not allowed on the furniture and must be free of ticks and fleas. Enclosed garden with easy access to walks on the farm. Consideration must be given to resident cats, birds, horses, farm animals and wildlife. Pets stay FREE. Doggie Damages Deposit required: YES.
