Arniston - Arniston Seaside Cottages

arniston-arniston-seaside-cottages-01Luxury self-catering accommodation at the popular South African seaside resort of Arniston, recommended by TIME MAGAZINE as one of The World's Best Hideaways. From Cape Town, take a leisurely drive along the N2, over the magnificent Sir Lowry's Pass, past the apple orchards of Grabouw and Elgin, and through the patchwork of Bredasdorp's wheatlands to Arniston, a fishing village two centuries old. Arniston is named after one of the many ships that got wrecked along this stretch of South African coastline, having become victims of the ‘Cape of Storms'.

Waenhuiskrans, meaning 'the wagon house cliff' because of its size, is an alternate name for Arniston. This incredible tidal cave was carved by the sea out of the sandstone cliff over centuries of time.

If you like to stay near 'home', just a stones throw away are rock pools where you can gather your own oysters or other delectable shellfish, and there is the slipway where you can bargain with local fishermen for fresh fish, or even catch your own Galjoen or Steenbras to cook over a braai in the privacy of your own thatched lapa.

But… you can also explore the dunes in your 4x4!

And that is still not all. The Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum is well worth a visit to read up on the rich local maritime history. Not far away is the historical town of Swellendam, which was the Capital of an independent Republic for a short while in its history. From there you can return via Malgas and see the quaint pont over the Breede River, the only hand operated pont in South Africa. The road back to Arniston takes you past the famous De Hoop Nature Reserve.

Or you can take an afternoon trip to Cape L'Agulhas, and stand there at the lighthouse on the southernmost point of the African continent and, gazing southwards, know that there is nothing but ocean between you and the South Pole. That is an awesome feeling!

During the winter months from May to November, you can view the Southern Right Whales that come to mate and calve in the warm waters off Arniston. Finally, take away with you some shells that you have collected one restful afternoon as you walked on the beach. Back at home, pick one up now and then, put it to your ear to hear again the sound of the surf breaking on the shore, and remember the pleasant days you spent at Arniston.
