Calitzdorp – The Retreat at Groenfontein
The Retreat is a gracious Victorian farmhouse in the lovely Groenfontein Valley conservancy bordering the 129.000ha Swartberg World Heritage Site. Situated 20kms northeast of Calitzdorp on a winding gravel road, The Retreat is a mere 59kms northwest of Oudtshoorn and 48kms southwest of the Cango caves. The roads are all gravel and tar, located just off the magical Route 62.
This lovely farmhouse offers 2 garden suites and 2 garden rooms in two annexes with spectacular views of the mountains; king-size beds which can be made up as twins; sitting-areas at a fireplace; 3 of the units each come with a Victorian bath and shower; the smaller unit has only a shower. The 2 suites each have an extra room with 2 single beds.
We have 1 cosy standard room in a converted milking-shed, with a king-size bed, fireplace and shower.
In the main house, we have 3 comfortable standard en-suite bedrooms with French doors leading onto a patio. These 4 rooms do not have mountains views. The guest-lounge and dining-room in the main house each boast a fireplace, and both lead onto the verandah overlooking the sweeping gardens and majestic Swartberg mountains.
Here at The Retreat, we enjoy treating our guests to true Klein-Karoo hospitality with hearty breakfasts and traditional home-cooked dinners served with a continental touch. Vegetarians are welcome and we cater for problem diets. Please let us know if you have any allergies or intolerances. We have a full liquor licence and carry a selection of wines from the region.

After the hectic, busy season we are now enjoying the calmer months!
We have made a new short trail adding on to the Blue Lizard; the Tumbleweed Trail. I stumbled across a large area of Boophone Disticha and can’t wait to see them all flowering in spring! We do ongoing maintenance on the walking trails making them clear and easy to negotiate and have put some benches in strategic places.
We have a new rescue dog , Bonny – a true Canis Africanus from the streets of Oudtshoorn – we found her at the O’hoorn pound. She gets on well with Spikey and Misty!
The little flock of guinea fowl which started to breed and hang around the gardens two years ago has become tamer and they come in for their mielies every day they had two clutches of chicks this season and are now 30 strong. We are very excited!
Bookings for our special rates should be made directly with The Retreat by email, or by phone.
