Groot Winterhoek / Porterville District – Pampoen Fontein Farm

Absolutely sublime setting. Coming to a place like this reminds one of what life is all about

High above the Swartland in the Groot Winterhoek Mountains, just two hours from Cape Town, we have 5 fully furnished self-catering cottages waiting for you!

Each of the Cottages, which are separated by a couple of hundred metres, has its own unique view and character. Two (Restio Cottage and Heron House) have private swimming pools and each sleep 8 people in 4 bedrooms.

Pelargonium and Protea Cottages are built against a dramatic sandstone koptjie, sleep 6 people each and share a pool which nestles against the koptjie.

Lilly Cottage, which sleeps 4 people, overlooks a small dam. Each of the cottages is FULLY equipped with everything that you should need for a self-catering holiday, from towels to teabags. All you have to bring is food and drink (the tap water, which comes from a borehole, is pristine good enough to bottle). Each cottage has a fireplace (it sometimes snows in winter!) and an outside braai. Firewood may be purchased by prior arrangement.

Pampoen Fontein Farm comprises 427 hectares of fynbos broken by rocky sandstone outcrops. The views are stunning. To the east the sun comes up over the Koue Bokkeveld Mountains which are often snow-capped in winter. From the lookout point picnic spot one looks out over the Swartland, 900 metres below to the west where, on a clear day, one can see Table Mountain. All the cottages are north-facing over the Citrusdal Valley to the Skuwweberg Mountains beyond. At night the starscape is spectacular.

There are several hiking and mountain-biking routes as well as a pristine dam to swim in (our dogs love this). Birdlife is prolific, including unusual species such as Verrauxs Eagle (Black Eagle) and the Cape Sugar Bird. Grey Rhebok are often seen grazing around the cottages and Klipspringer stand sentinel on the rocky outcrops. The Cape Mountain Leopard is very much a resident, though rarely seen. We also keep a small herd of Nguni Cattle.

PET POLICY: All well-behaved, socialised dogs and caged birds welcome all year round. Pets sleep inside; bring their own pet beds, bedding and bowls. Dogs are not allowed on the furniture or beds and must be free of ticks and fleas. Please clean up after your dogs in the direct vicinity of the cottage you are staying in. Easy access to walks – we also ask that dogs are kept on leads when away from the cottages and this is for a couple of reasons: there are baboons and snakes on the farm; we have also had incidents in the past where guest dogs have attacked our livestock and chased the antelope. Consideration must be given to resident dogs, farm animals and wildlife. Pets stay FREE. Doggie Damages Deposit required: NONE.
