Detailed Information

Wakkerstroom – Mahem and Bokmakierie Cottage

We are a petfriendly establishment!

Mahem

Mahem is the Afrikaans name for the grey crowned crane. The actual call of the grey crowned crane is mahem and you will hear the call from the house mostly early in the morning or evening. Built around 1890, this spacious but cosy home has been refurbished and extended to make a spacious entertainment area with open plan layout from the lounge to the adjacent kitchen. There are 4 bedrooms and a bathroom section that has a full bathroom with shower, toilet and bath, as well as a separate toilet, and a shower room. All bedrooms have wall heaters; bedding and towels are provided. There is a fireplace in the lounge and an old coal stove in the dining room. The bathroom/dining room/kitchen area all have underfloor heating. The farm kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering and has two fridges, a gas stove with electric oven, microwave, washing machine and a dishwasher. There is also a Weber braai available if you want to cook on the patio, which has spectacular views over the wetland. The property is fenced.

Bokmakierie

No guessing which bird this lovely small cottage was named after! You can often hear its call when you wake up in the morning! Bokmakierie Cottage has a lounge/dining room area and a small kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, etc.  It has one bedroom with two single beds and an adjacent newly renovated bathroom with a toilet, basin and lovely shower. Bedding and towels are provided. There is a lovely patio with beautiful views over the wetland and it also has a built-in braai.

Walk the Dogs

There is a lovely big garden for dogs to play in and it’s completely fenced in.

You can also walk your dog/s on a leash anywhere in Wakkerstroom itself as the town is peaceful and quiet with very little traffic. The airstrip on the Amersfoort road is a wonderful, open  road where you can take your dogs for a long run. Then you can walk down from the strip to Martin’s Dam where they can frolic in the water.

You can also get a map at the Info Centre with all the hiking routes in the area marked on it if you are looking for more walks that dogs can enjoy too!
