Hugh Wyndham Park in Dunkeld is another favourite spot among readers.

Described as a ‘hidden gem’ and Johannesburg’s ‘secret garden’, The Wilds comprises 18ha of ground on the most northerly of the several rocky ridges on which Johannesburg is built and is planted exclusively with indigenous flora. Nestled between Houghton, Killarney and Parktown, The Wilds is within easy walking distance from the most densely populated area of Johannesburg, namely the Yeoville, Berea and Hillbrow complex. The Wilds is probably Johannesburg's most attractive park. It is intensively planted and there are several little streams and waterfalls. The Wilds was declared a national monument in 1981.

If you would like to go on an informal group walk (dogs on leads and children welcome), these take place on Sundays at 07h00, from September through to May.

Lonehill Dam – a reader writes: “We walk our dogs at Lonehill Dam. It is a lovely walk and there are always loads of other dogs for our dogs to socialise with.”

Lonehill Koppie

This lonely koppie is located on the northern border of Johannesburg’s suburbs. The area has several small streams trickling through it and there are quite a few dassies around. There is a small dam called Lonehill Loch, around 200 metres north of the Koppie, a popular walking spot for local residents. There is a security guard on duty at the dam, keeping an eye on walkers with their dogs. To get there, follow the R511/ William Nicol Drive until you get to Mulbarton Road in the suburb of Beverly. At the circle keep right going into Lonehill Boulevard. Then turn right into Crestwood and follow the road a little way. Lonehill should be on the left.

The Crooked Tree Dog Park and Campsite is situated in the heart of Magaliesburg, only 20km from Krugersdorp.

Bring your dogs to enjoy the freedom to run, play and swim in the river while you sit down to relax with a drink and soak up the peace in a tranquil country setting. Picnic and braai areas are situated alongside the river for the whole family to enjoy under huge shady trees.

You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks. We will provide boerewors and prego rolls for tables or groups of people booked in advance.

Next to Bedfordview there is a green area in Morninghill at the bottom of Linksfield Ridge that is popular with dog walkers.

Walkhaven is situated in the Muldersdrift area right next to the Cradle of Humankind on 22 hectares of rolling grassland. Walkhaven also has a fully stocked dam surrounded by lush wetland that is home to a large variety of feathered friends. Braai and picnic facilities are strategically placed throughout the park should you wish to bring your own refreshments.

Inspired by the owners, Dave & Lorna Fowler, Walkhaven Dog Park opened its gates to dog lovers in 2006. Originally, simply a secure place to exercise dogs, it has grown to include the dog-friendly Walkhaven Kitchen, The Dog Box, Jurassic Bark Kennel and the function and entertainment area, Lapamanzi.

Entrance to Walkhaven Dog Park is R20 per adult and R10 for kids under 12.
